There are implications for marketers beyond the 30,000-foot observation that some states are cooler than others because of the prevalence of one smartphone over another.
Jumptap data tells us that consumers in the South and Southwest tend to be Android-biased compared to the rest of the country, while those in the Midwest and Northeast lean towards iOS. California, Texas and Florida over-index for Android use and states in New England and the Midwest over-index for iOS use. Blackberry use, which over-indexed in New York, was also included in the geographic data.
Drilling down, Northern California is iPhone territory while it is, pun intended, to close to call in Los Angeles.
This means what?
Relevance wins on a mobile device. The more you know about your target, including what device he or she carries, the better your chance for a sale and perhaps the beginning of ongoing engagement that leads to loyalty.
